I use Evernote and I love it. When browsing websites, the "Clip to Evernote" feature is wonderful for saving all those bits of information you encounter and want to save.

Great post! I follow a lot of these tips on the nights I have trouble sleeping. Another tip I would suggest to those who are anxious for the following day would be writing out your 'To Do's" while laying in bed. When I do this, I feel like I've got a much better idea of what lays ahead for me and can rest peacefully knowing I've got my task list ready to go! Never hurts to get a little organization going... :)

Vickie,
That was me last night! I thought of my freelance career and how it was going nowhere, not worried just thinking about it. I decided to outline my next blog post since it's been a while. I promised my self at the beginning of the year that I would be doing regular entries to all 3 blogs and have not been there since January. Over the weekend I finally got two entries on two blogs. I am not sure if this next entry on my third blog will be a bridge burner but what is on my mind has a lot to do why the lack of motivation.

Hi Vickie,

Great post. It's nice to have an idea of what is happening Stateside. I am in Australia and work as a freelance editor and writer.

We usually charge a project fee or an hourly rate as a freelance editor. In terms of hourly rates we start at $60 AUD per hour but if you do work for mining publications or certain companies you can get $80 to $150 AUD per hour easily.

Our union has a recommended rate of $211 per hour for editing work and $0.90 per word for writing work. Publications in Australia cannot always afford to pay that much but it definitely gives you a place to start negotiating and knowing how much it is gives you a better idea of who to work for and why. Currently I get paid $0.60 cents per word for my writing which is a good deal because a lot of more experienced journalists are under the impression that they can only get $0.30 cents per word at best.

So my advice to you is to find out what the recommended rate is as put forward by your union or your professional society and then use that and the figure you need to make annually (tax, pension/superannuation, savings included) to determine your rate and then defend it. Have a slightly discounted rate for Not For Profits and stick to it.

You see, part of being able to charge a rate that allows you to make a living is educating the customers and the market about that rate and you will only do that if you stick to your rate.

Cheers, Marisa.
